Main duties:
I arrived at the start-up of the Mission, which was established to support Nepals emerging peace process. Under tight time constraints and before the Mission staffing and infrastructure were established, I worked hard as part of a 3-person (later 5-person) team to help establish the UN Volunteer Support Office:
Establishing office systems from the start-up, in order to be able to assist in the recruitment and deployment of over 300 UN Volunteers from more than 70 countries to work in all teams of the Mission.
Liaison with all substantive and administrative sections of the Mission, in order to assist in the placement and support of UN Volunteers into their teams.
Coordination on a daily basis with UN Volunteer headquarters in Bonn, Germany, to assist in recruitment, deployment and repatriation procedures for over 300 UN Volunteers.
Development of tracking systems for all recruitment, deployment and repatriation of UN Volunteers, including a specific database.
Focal point for monitoring attendance and leave: skilled at UN personnel management systems, including the Matrix System and the Field Personnel Management System. Responsible for data entry and management of UN Volunteer information into the Staff Management System, Post Management System and the Matrix System. Tracked all UN Volunteer attendance and leave arrangements.
Develop the offices filing system, to ensure a user-friendly system for fast access.
Manage database of all UN Volunteer insurance claims.
Assisted newly arrived UN Volunteers with all aspects of arrival and checking in: eg. arranged accommodation, settling-in-grants, volunteer living allowances; prepare welcome kits of all relevant documents, organised orientation briefings for all new UN Volunteers, including liaison with international and national staff for briefings on local culture and the political situation and on all substantive and administrative sections of the Mission.
Daily support to UN Volunteers: eg organizing medical and hospital support to sick and injured UN Volunteers, including regular liaison with hotels, international clinics and hospital; liaison with Travel Section of the Mission to arrange visas for UN Volunteers.
Achievements:
This job was a new experience for me, working in the UN in this international environment. I was happy with my ability to adapt to and handle all the work during my assignment with UNMIN. I have developed my administrative skills, and improved my confidence working with a very diverse international team. Particular achievements:
Creation of a data base of UN volunteers into spread sheet, which was very useful for managing all UN Volunteer information.
Create and organize the filing system of the UNV Support Unit, with an easy system to quickly find documents needed, and also handled all the attendance records UN Volunteers in the matrix system. Learning all the key UN personnel management systems was a good experience.
Working with other sections to support all UN Volunteers during their assignments with the Mission, handle and follow up all the complaints from UN Volunteers with a smile and good human feeling and understanding, and to make sure that all matters were resolved as soon as possible.
2003 February 2007: Bali, Indonesia
Position: Supervisor Sales Executive (Project Supervisor)
Employer: Ace Hardware Indonesia, PT Home Center Pty Ltd, Bali, Indonesia (a US company with a rapidly expanding business in Asia, including Indonesia, focusing on lifestyle and a wide range of home improvement products. Customer base is both corporate, eg hotels and restaurants, and retail), with a large international customer base in Bali)
Main duties:
Managed the corporate client base of Ace Hardware for the Bali store, including 3-5 star hotels, restaurants, spa resorts. This involved customer liaison, and project management eg concept design for new businesses and supervising hotel and restaurant fittings and furnishing. My role was to ensure that corporate customers received a creative, responsive service and that we delivered quality and on time.
Act as a front office manager at the Bali store of Ace Hardware. The store has over 200 staff (full and part time). My role included managing staff rosters, supporting and supervising staff including training staff, trouble-shooting, customer relations. I was also responsible for managing procurement and management of stock.
Assist Ace set up new stores in other provinces of Indonesia, and in the Asian region (eg Singapore). I traveled to a number of provinces to assist in the establishment of new stores. My main roles were to assist in large scale staff recruitment and training, and the set up of office and store systems.
I regularly participated in Ace Hardware national management meetings in the capital, Jakarta.
See below for three month leave period from this position, when I worked in New York, USA.
Achievements:
As a supervisor I was able to establish a very positive team environment and to support and guide staff in a very good way. This included encouraging out-of-office activities in a way that creates enjoyment and harmony among team members. Some particular achievements:
With my marketing skills I successfully helped establish Ace Hardware/Home Center Indonesia in Bali with major hotels, restaurants, bars and other businesses in Bali, Lombok and some parts of East Java Island especially through direct work with owners and managers and in building the goodwill of Ace Hardware.
Always exceeded monthly and annual targets, achieved largely through excellent customer service and follow-up.
Responsible for handling customer complaints, which I managed well in a way that has both helped customers get satisfaction, and so they will return with future business, also helping the image of Ace Hardware.

I took leave from my Ace Hardware position for three months to work with Dreamworld Handicrafts, who I had previously worked with in Indonesia and Thailand in export wholesale work (see below).

Established and managed a retail handicrafts store in New York (Asian handicrafts), for the busy Christmas period. I had responsibility for all aspects of business management including managing premises, financial and stock management, coordination with head office in Los Angeles, staff supervision (small team).
